The National Delphi is a single-cone biscuit-bridge resonator guitar manufactured by National Reso-Phonic. Introduced in the 1990s and produced through the mid-2000s, the Delphi was engineered as a more affordable version of National's flagship Triolian models. It was designed specifically to give acoustic blues and slide players the iconic, powerful 1930s-style metal-body response without a premium price tag.
Body Construction: Thin-gauge steel body with rolled "F" holes and a ribbed sieve-hole coverplate.
Cone & Bridge: Equipped with a hand-spun aluminum resonator cone (often featuring National's "Hot Rod" design) and a maple biscuit bridge.
Neck & Fretboard: Solid mahogany neck with a V profile, meeting the body at the 12th fret. It features a rosewood fingerboard and a traditional scale with standard nut width.
Headstock: Traditional slotted headstock sporting the iconic National "shield" logo decal.
Aesthetics & Finishes: Unlike the high-polish or intricately engraved premium models, the Delphi focused on rugged, minimalist utility. It was offered in various powder-coated or baked enamel finishes, including Satin Blue, Taupe, Metallic Blue Sunburst, Matte Black, and Grey Polychrome.
Tone and Character: The steel body construction yields a loud, punchy, and bright tone with substantial midrange emphasis and lingering sustain. Compared to brass-bodied resonators (which lean warmer and sweeter), the Delphi delivers a raspy, authentic delta-blues bark mimicking vintage 1930s Triolian and Duolian guitars, making it a highly favored option for slide work and hybrid fingerpicking.
